News Summary

Drugs containing pseudoephedrine will no longer be sold from store shelves in Walgreen drug locations, the company announced in a move designed to prevent home chemists from making methamphetamine, Reuters reported Aug. 5.

The nation's largest drugstore chain said that as of the end of October, customers would only be able to buy drugs containing pseudoephedrine from behind pharmacy counters. Such drugs include cold medicines like Sudafed and Tylenol Cold and are coveted by meth makers, who extract the ephedrine from the pills to make the illegal stimulant.

CVS, Target, and Albertsons, some of the nation's other big sellers of cold medicines, have announced similar policies. Congress also is weighing a bill to restrict sales of drugs containing pseudoephedrine nationally.
