Ten Policy Changes That Could Curb Tobacco Addiction

At least 10 percent of U.S. smokers would quit and 3 million premature deaths would be prevented if 10 policy changes were instituted nationwide concludes a federally appointed panel led by Michael C. Fiore, M.D., M.P.H., director of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) national program Addressing Tobacco in Managed Care.

The Special Report includes:

  • Recommendations from the Department of Health and Human Services, among them: establish a Smoker's Health Fund by increasing the federal excise tax on cigarettes by $2 per pack and launch a federally funded national tobacco quit line.
  • Comments from Researcher Michael C. Fiore, M.D., M.P.H on the feasibility of implementing the recommendations and potential impact.
  • Statistics on Tobacco Addiction.
