NIDA: Drugs of Abuse and HIV/AIDS Information
Today, an estimated 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS. Of these, 2 to 3 million people are injecting drug users. In the United States, an estimated one-third of HIV/AIDS cases are related to injecting drug use. Research shows that use of drugs, injected or not, can affect decision making - particularly about engaging in unsafe sex - that can endanger one's health and the health of others.
