National Surveys of Drinking and Driving, Attitudes and Behavior
Royal, Dawn Gallup Organization and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Racial & Ethnic Group Comparisons: National Surveys of Drinking & Driving, Attitudes & Behavior: 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999
This study, sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and conducted by the Gallup Organization, found that white drivers are responsible for 84 percent of all drunk-driving cases, even though they only account for 77 percent of road trips. The study also found that blacks make up 9 percent of the driving-age population, but account for only 5 percent of all drunk-driving cases. In addition, the study showed that most drunken drivers are youth.
The study was based on telephone interviews with a sample of drivers aged 16 to 64 and examined drinking and driving behaviors and attitudes among various racial and ethnic groups. Based on the study's results, the authors advised that alcohol-abuse prevention groups should begin focusing more education programs around small rural and working-class communities where whites generally live.
