TIP 49: Incorporating Alcohol Pharmacotherapies Into Medical Practice
This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) provides clinical guidelines for the proper use of medications in the treatment of alcohol use disorders. The underlying objective is to expand access to information about the effective use of these medications, not only in specialty substance abuse treatment programs but through physicians offices and other general medical care settings.
The TIP includes discussions of medications approved for treating alcohol use disorders by the Food and Drug Administration: acamprosate, disulfiram, oral naltrexone, and extended- release injectable naltrexone. The TIP describes each medication's history, the reasons for its use, how to use it, who should use it, and other clinical information.
