Policy Brief: Federal Drug Budget Trend

The Research and Policy Analysis Group of Carnevale Associates, LLC released its latest Policy Brief analyzing the federal drug control budget from Fiscal Year 2002 through Fiscal Year 2009.

The analysis of the federal drug control budget shows that, from FY2002 through FY2009, there has been a strong emphasis on supply reduction programs over demand reduction programs.

Resources for demand reduction programs were cut over this period even though research has shown supply reduction to be the least effective ingredient in federal drug control policy.

Consequently, the result of this decade's federal drug budget has been a doubling of resources towards the least effective ingredients of drug policy and a neglect of evidence-based practices.
