2006 State of Tobacco Control Report Card
The American Lung Association's annual report card on state tobacco-control activities grades states in four areas: smokefree air, tobacco taxes, prevention funding and restrictions on youth access to tobacco products. While it praises the growing number of states that have adopted smokefree workplace laws and raised tobacco taxes, it also demonstrates that most states have done a poor job of funding youth smoking prevention programs. Only Maine received an "A" grade in all four categories (the state repeated the feat from 2005). A total of 26 states and the District of Columbia received passing grades of "C" or better -- the most ever -- in the smokefree workplace category.
