Water Pipes Favored Over Cigarettes by Many College Athletes

Research Summary

About 30 percent of college students have smoked tobacco from a hookah, or water pipe, and some college athletes are more likely than non-athletes to smoke a hookah despite the fact that athletes are typically less likely to smoke cigarettes.

Medical News Today reported Aug. 27 that researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that while varsity athletes were 22 percent less likely than non-athletes to smoke a water pipe, club and intramural athletes were 15 percent more likely to do so than their non-athlete peers.

"Varsity athletes may be particularly cautious with any type of substance use because of the demands of their sport and the seriousness of their athletic commitment," said study author Brian Primack, M.D., of the Pitt School of Medicine. "But club and intramural athletes clearly perceive this as a safer form of tobacco use. We in public health need to impress upon them that it is not."

The study was published online in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The latter quote attributed to Brian Primack (the study's primary author) is misleading, and wasn't evaluated or concluded in the study. While there is little evidence that inhaling tobacco smoke from a waterpipe is less hazardous than inhaling smoke from a cigarette, the overwhelming majority of hookah smokers (in America) do not smoke hookahs a dozen or more times daily (as do most cigarette smokers). As such, it is misleading to claim that hookah smoking is as hazardous as cigarette smoking. Somewhat similarly, cigar smoking is less hazardous than cigarette smoking for the overhwhelming majority of cigar smokers (as most cigar smokers don't inhale, and most don't smoke daily). Health researchers should stop misleading the public about vastly different health risks of using different tobacco products, as daily cigarette smoking causes 99% of all tobacco related diseases, disabilities and deaths in the US.

As usual Bill is 99% right. Primack's comment was and is stupid. But viewing it as an election in a democracy, consider that over 30% even trying a bong despite a 1000-1 financial difference between cigarette advertising and ads for any alternative constitutes a New Hampshire victory for the bong.
