'Thirdhand Smoke' Lingers on Surfaces, Threatens Kids

Research Summary

Toxic dust from smoking settles on surfaces and dangerous volatile compounds disperse in the air, posing a risk to children and others from so-called "thirdhand smoke," experts say.

The Chicago Tribune reported Jan. 5 that the residue from tobacco smoke is especially dangerous to children "because they breathe near, crawl and play on, touch and mouth contaminated surfaces," according to a recent study in the journal Pediatrics.

Some parents have instituted no-smoking policies in their homes after learning about the dangers of "thirdhand smoke" -- similar to decisions not to use lawn chemicals in areas where children play. "We think this is a reminder to parents -- smokers and nonsmokers alike -- that if they allow smoking in the home, it's going to hurt their children," said Joel Africk, president and CEO of the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago.

The study appears in the January 2009 issue of Pediatrics.

I think you people are reaching! Any surface can be washed. Give me a break!

The news headlines and articles about this study misrepresented its findings. The population survey simply asked people if they believed that third hand smoke is hazardous to children, and then reported that a majority of respondents agreed. Unfortunately, all the news stories simply quoted Winickoff (the survey's author) as claiming (without providing any evidence) that third hand smoke exposure is very harmful to children.

We've taken this to new and even more ridiculous extremes. Third-hand smoke threatens kids? So do a lot of other things --like crossing a busy street, for instance. Can we stop wrapping our kids in cotton batting and expecting them to be able to navigate a life-threatening world? There is a lot of other research needed, that is far more deserving of shrinking funding

The purpose of this article was not to prove that residual second hand smoke ("third-hand smoke") is harmful. That is already well established in the scientific literature. The fact that some of you deny it or refuse to believe it simply reinforces the articles point which is that smokers are less likely to recognize these harms to children than are nonsmokers.

This is all a filthy Big Lie. The anti-smokers are guilty of flagrant scientific fraud for ignoring more than 50 studies, which show that human papillomaviruses cause over ten times more lung cancers than they pretend are caused by secondhand smoke. Passive smokers are more likely to have been exposed to this virus, so the anti-smokers' studies, because they are all based on nothing but lifestyle questionnaires, have been cynically DESIGNED to falsely blame passive smoking for all those extra lung cancers that are really caused by HPV. http://www.smokershistory.com/hpvlungc.htm
