Research Summary

New research from Spain suggests that THC -- the main active ingredient in marijuana – may have potential for fighting cancer by promoting cancer cell death Reuters reported April 2.

Guillermo Velasco and colleagues at Complutense University in Madrid found decreased tumor growth and increased autophagy, leading to cancer cell death, in mice with cancer after the lab animals received doses of THC. The researchers also found that THC appeared kill off cancer cells in a pair of patients diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

"Our findings support that safe, therapeutically efficacious doses of THC may be reached in cancer patients," Velasco said.
The findings were published April 1, 2009 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

This is of NO suprise to me and other proponents of Medical Marijuana, we have been advocating the efficacy of cannabis as a medicine for years. But No "We just want to get high." say the opponents. Some of us use recreationally and benefit from the medicinal effects and then there are the people who started using medically and benefit from the euphoric effects. I just wish that people would stop attacking this MIRACULOUS , BENIGN PLANT that has FAR MORE benefits than detrimental effects. The worst part of smoking the plant is that smoking ANYTHING will cause lung damage but NOT associated with LUNG CANCER. Vaporizers have eliminated the lung damage aspects. TOO many people seem to forget that before 1937 "REEFER MADNESS" Cannabis was a viable medicine before it became The DEVIL'S WEED.."SO,What say you?"

Here's my prediction, Donald. It will not only be banned but the pharmaceutical companies will be the ONLY people allowed to possess pot for the THC. Just like nicotine has been found to beneficial to some diseases like Parkinson's Disease. The antis are trying to obliterate tobacco so the the drug companies are the only ones with the nicotine (gum, patches, lozenges). I heard pot was legal until some idiot millionaire who owned paper companies was worried that hemp would put him out of business so he campaigned to have it made illegal. In this country, money (and the vast wealth of "non" profits with prohibition agendas) talks. They don't really want cures. Their gravy trains will be cut off if we truly find cures.

Thanks to Join Together for covering this new medical research report. Sadly, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia came to the same finding -- that components in cannabis killed or hindered growth of six separate cancer cell lines -- in the mid 1970s. However, their research was funded by NIDA and the DEA, who promptly pulled funding for the research and impeded its publication. The researchers were forced to pursue publication themselves because NIDA would not cover this critically important research finding. How many people have died needlessly from cancer since the mid 70s because of this government censorship? They may make up the largest group of victims of our war of "some" drugs.

What you said ichoosefreedom has already come to pass. Although cannabis is illegal and according to the DOJ, DEA, FDA, and many others this is a schedule 1 drug along with heroin (of NO medical use) and yet we already (and have for years now) have Marinol. "OUR" government are such a bunch of HYPOCRITES who still have 3 patients recieving monthly cannisters of medical marijuana from a GOVERNMENT program Clinton had eliminated but the patients already on the program fought and won the right to continue recieving government medical marijuana until their demise. So I have ample reasons NOT to believe and or trust "MY" government to act in "MY" best interests on many issues, this is just ONE. Bernie, You are so dead ON and if the hypocrites on the Hill had any morals and compassion they would reclassify cannabis from a schedule 1 drug to at least a schedule 3 drug and take it off the list of the war on drugs and allow TRUE scientific research to show all the nasayers the TRUTHS of this God given wonder. Now thats one long run on sentence. I could fix it but I'm not gonna !!

I find it peculiar that we haven't heard from the prohibitionists on this particular article.

I don't consider myself a prohibitionist but I am someone with a past addiction to marijuana and am now a treatment professional. Like alcohol, marijuana no doubt has both harmful and beneficial effects. Some misuse it and some don't. I support the Obama administration's de-emphasis on pot prosecutions. But "the efficacy of cannabis as a medicine" can only be proven by controlled scientific study. Making claims without that evidence is wishful thinking. More study is needed before we consider news like this as "proven".
