Research Summary

Misuse of prescription drugs occurs at a much higher rate among U.S. troops than the general population, with 22 percent of soldiers and 20 percent of Marines reporting prescription-drug abuse within the past year, USA Today reported Dec. 17.

The Department of Defense survey of service members found that prescription painkillers were the most commonly misused drugs.

The survey also found that 11 percent of soldiers exhibited signs of post-traumatic stress disorder in 2008 -- notably in the Army and Marine Corps -- and that 60 percent of Marines admitted to binge drinking. Two percent of service members acknowledged that they had thought about committing suicide during the past year.

Hard to believe, but I just read something on the news blip running at the bottom of the screen on "Good Morning America" - that "experts" have found that MORPHINE HELPS soldiers with PTSD. Are they kidding? And we wonder why there will be MORE addiction among soldiers that have been traumatized?? Our own drug companies have perpetuated the myth that opioids are safe, and sadly, the medical community has bought into their lies. They are prescribing opioids at an unprecedented rate and CREATING and FEEDING the prescription pain killer epidemic that is raging in this country, and will now be also destroying the lives of soldiers and their families. Haven't they sacrificed enough? We are not evolving in this country - we are regressing! And it's all about money, greed and power - that's "big business" for you. Abominable!
