Wine Benefits for Liver Reported

Research Summary

Past studies have indicated that moderate alcohol consumption may aid coronary health, but now researchers are saying that light wine drinking also could improve liver health, Science Daily reported May 20.

Researchers at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine say that drinking a glass of wine daily may cut in half the risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). Drinking small amounts of beer or liquor, however, increased the odds of developing NAFLD fourfold.

"Because this effect was only seen with wine, not in beer or liquor, further studies will be needed to determine whether the benefits seen were due to the alcohol or non-alcohol components of wine," said lead researcher Jeffrey Schwimmer, M.D.

The findings were based on a study of about 12,000 individuals. The study appears in the June 2008 issue of the journal Hepatology.

I wouldn't rely on alcohol to help me combat liver and heart problems I think diet and exercise has been and always will be the best thing.

Like so many of us, Adrianne wants it to be simple: Something is either good or bad, and so we should or should not do it. I understand entirely. But most things have potential for both good and bad, and moderate alcohol appears to be so--good for heart and liver, bad for cancer.

This is so ridiculous, just last week Join Together summarized an article about scientific findings that indicate that even moderate drinking raises the risk of several types of cancer. So which is it? Is moderate drinking good for us but bad for us at the same time, thus cancelling out the good? I think complete abstinence is probably the safer route but who knows what study will be published tomorrow.
