Alcohol-Related Hospital Admissions Double in U.K.May 27, 2008
Research Summary
Twice as many people were admitted to hospitals in the U.K. with alcohol-related problems in 2006-07 than a decade earlier, according to new government research.
Reuters reported May 22 that hospital admissions with a primary or secondary diagnosis related to alcohol rose from 93,459 in 1995-96 to 207,788 in 2006-07, according to the National Health Service's Information Center for Health and Social Care. Between 2001 and 2007, alcohol-related deaths increased 19 percent.
Alcohol also is related to half of the violent crimes and one-third of domestic violence incidents in the U.K. Research shows that Britons are drinking at an earlier age and are drinking more than ever.
