Research Summary

Not all binge drinkers are created equal, according to a new report: while adult heavy drinkers prefer to binge on beer, adolescent binge drinkers prefer liquor, possibly because it's easier to obtain, the Associated Press reported Aug. 7.

Researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that while beer is easier for adults to obtain, teens often can raid their parents' liquor cabinets without being noticed.

The study found that 75 percent of adult binge drinkers preferred beer, while 17 percent drank liquor and 9 percent drank wine. But liquor was the most popular drink among youth binge drinkers, accounting for 49 percent of underage consumption in Arkansas, for example.

The data was drawn from a pair of studies, including surveys in four states: Arkansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The research was reported in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
