Research Summary

Programs in Iowa and Norway were among those identified by researchers as successful, family oriented anti-smoking interventions, HealthDay News reported Jan. 24.

Canadian researchers reviewed 14 past studies and cited a number of programs that succeeded in preventing youth smoking, including an Iowa program that urged parents to set tough rules about tobacco use and a Norwegian program that took an opposite approach -- telling kids they had the right to choose whether or not to smoke.

Both brief interventions and longer-term programs were cited. Researchers said the programs that targeted children before they reached middle school were the most successful.

The study appears in The Cochrane Library
