Wine Drinkers Eat Better than Beer DrinkersJanuary 20, 2006
Research Summary
Wine drinkers tend to buy more fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods than beer drinkers, who tend to buy more prepared meals and soft drinks, Reuters reported Jan. 19.Researchers from the National Institute of Public Health in Copenhagen, Denmark studied 3.5 million transactions from supermarkets that sold wine and beer and found that wine buyers bought more fruits, vegetables, olives, and low-fat cheese and cooking oil, while beer buyers purchased more ready-made meals, sodas, sugar, sausages, lamb, butter and margarine.
"This study indicates that people who buy wine purchase a greater number of healthy food items than those who buy beer," said lead researcher Morten Gronbaek, who said studies in the U.S. and France yielded similar results.
He also noted that wine drinkers tend to be better educated than beer drinkers, and more likely to be moderate drinkers.
The research was reported in the British Medical Journal.
