Meth Treatment Yields Higher Success Rate, Study SaysMay 6, 2005
Research Summary
A study conducted by the Iowa Consortium for Substance Abuse Research and Evaluation at the University of Iowa revealed that the success rate for treatment of methamphetamine addiction is significantly higher than that of other drugs, the Associated Press reported on April 25.Out of over 800 patients treated for substance use disorders, meth users were most likely to abstain from using the drug, at an abstinence rate of 65 percent six months after treatment, according to the study. The rate of abstinence for alcohol users was the lowest, at 44 percent.
The study will hopefully persuade people to seek treatment, said Martin Van Haaften, drug policy advisor to Governor Tom Vilsack.
