Research Summary

People who drive after smoking marijuana put themselves at nearly double the risk of being involved in a fatal crash, a French government study says.

The BBC reported Dec. 2 that the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research said that about 7 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes had evidence of marijuana in their systems, compared to 21.4 percent found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

Researchers said that the risk of being involved in a crash increased with marijuana dosage. An estimated 2.5 percent of fatal crashes in France are attributable to marijuana use, the report said.

The study was published in the Dec. 3, 2005 issue of the British Medical Journal.
