Research Summary

A two-year study on giving free heroin to addicts got under way in Vancouver this week, as the first group of test subjects received and injected their drugs, the Associated Press reported March 15.

Three heroin addicts showed up at the North American Opiate Medication Initiative (NAOMI) clinic on Tuesday, the first of 157 users who will take part in the study. "Today, the treatment stage of the NAOMI study begins," said spokesman Jim Boothroyd. "The clinical trial is fully up and running."

Half the group will get heroin, while the other half will get methadone; drugs will be taken under supervised conditions using clean needles, and users will get free medical care and $150 for taking part in the study.

An estimated 4,000 opiate addicts live in the downtown Vancouver neighborhood where NAOMI is based; the study participants have all been addicted for five year or more and have previously failed in methadone or abstinence-based programs. Program participants will visit the clinic three times daily.

This is absurd; I can't comprehend the rational behind this? It's bad enough that opiate replacement "therapy" is pushed on addicts when they go into detox, but now offering the real thing?!? CRAZY! The only way for an addict to recover is to treat the disease they have, the disease of addiction. There is a way out for people who need and WANT a way out. Dolling out heroin legally is a junkie's dream come true -enabling will prolong thier reaching bottom, that point of desperation which drives addicts to WANT to stop. There is a way out, it's called Narcotics Anonymous; our literature states "an addict, ANY addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way of life.... All this study does is contribute to the problem, what happend to working on the solution?

Clearly the treatment that we have today is not working for everyone, and that includes all the 12 step, in patient, detox etc.etc. I think that we can all see that the "War on drugs" is also not working. So I think it is great that we are not beating a dead horse. The treatment we have in NOT WORKING, so we have to think outside the box. Addict spend alot of time building a "using friendly" lifestyle, and it looks like this study is eliminating this and looking at different aspects of treatment and addiction.

FINALLY, another experiment that is successful. ie Switzerland just made this a treatment for Heroin addicts, Under permanent legislation as a successful treatment method. I am hoping that this will be brought to the US, but I'm not holding My Breath....

Being a young educated addict I should know what works for me! I have failed the methadone program 3 times and your right any heroin addict would love to join and get free heroin, but if u really look at the whole picture I failed the clinic because I wasn't absent from heroin. But I haven't missed a dose or a day of work. After the dose initially stabolizes then the methadone user doesn't get the high effect, I just don't get dope-sick. But if the heroin clinic was to provide clean needles, counseling services, and a never ending supply of good clean pure dope, then sign me up! Hey at least us addicts would be monitored and the heroin would be federally regulated, purer, and safer. This shouldn't be scrutinized and looked beyond until the facts come out of these test trials. I'm sure a lot of people will be amazed. Hey have a open mind people.
