Research Summary

A drug that works on the brain's cannabinoid system appears to ease anxiety in rats and increase brain cells, Fox News reported Oct. 13.

The drug, HU210, is chemically similar to marijuana. Researcher Xia Zhang of the University of Saskatchewan tested lab rats and found that those that received the drug for a month grew new cells in the hippocampus -- the region of the brain associated with emotion and memory formation.

Other illicit drugs have been shown to block the formation of new cells in the hippocampus.

The research appears in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
