Cities Also Grapple with MethJanuary 28, 2005
Research Summary
While rural communities have borne the brunt of the methamphetamine epidemic, cities are now feeling the impact, as well, the Associated Press reported Jan. 28.Self-help and treatment programs in cities like Chicago and Atlanta are seeing an influx of meth users. In Minneapolis-St. Paul, 10 percent of treatment clients are addicted to meth, many of them minors. In Miami, experts compared the increase in meth use to the early days of the cocaine epidemic.
Typically, meth use first becomes popular in urban clubs and raves -- notably among gay men -- then spreads to the population at large. The typical meth user is white, but the drug may now be gaining some traction in the black and Hispanic communities as well. The drug also is popular among women, who like the drug because it helps them lose weight.
