Research Summary

The Canadian government has given the go-ahead to a 21-month pilot project in which heroin will be dispensed to addicted individuals in Vancouver, the Victoria Times Colonist reported Aug. 19.

The North American Opiate Medication Initiative, which will begin by the end of the year at a clinic in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, will involve 158 drug users.

Through the program, 88 heroin-addicted individuals will receive prescribed heroin in combination with methadone, while 70 other heroin users will receive methadone only. Outcomes for both groups will be tracked and compared.

The project is the first North American study of its kind.
