Study: Women Hit Harder by AddictionJune 23, 2004
Research Summary
A new study by the University of Connecticut (UConn) Health Center and Yale University School of Medicine finds that women experience more psychiatric, medical, and employment complications from alcohol and other drug addiction than men, the Hartford Courant reported June 22.The study involved interviews with 271 participants at two drug-treatment centers in Connecticut. Of the participants, 156 were women and 115 were men.
Although men and women appear to become addicted to drugs at the same age, and the severity of addiction is about the same, the researchers found that women had more related problems and sought treatment sooner than men.
"The findings may help to support more aggressive prevention efforts among women at risk and create gender-specific treatment for drug and alcohol dependence," said Dr. Carlos Hernandez-Avila of UConn's Alcohol Research Center and lead author of the study.
The study's findings are published in the June 11, 2004 issue of the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.
