A Scottish study concludes that giving drug offenders the option of treatment instead of prison is effective in reducing recidivism, the BBC reported Oct. 26.According to Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson, the Stirling University study found that the court program had a 50-percent success rate, which translates into a significant reduction in crime.
The Drug Treatment and Testing Order, which began five years ago in Glasgow and Fife, is now being introduced in courts throughout Scotland.
Under the program, offenders receive treatment, which includes counseling and rehabilitation, and are tested regularly to ensure that they remain drug-free.
