Emergency-room visits related to methamphetamine use went up 54 percent between 1995 to 2002, with large increases seen in the Midwest and East, UPI reported Aug. 17.

According to the report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), there were 39,000 ER visits for amphetamine or methamphetamine misuse during the seven-year period, with big increases between 1999 and 2002.

The West had the highest rate of amphetamine/methamphetamine-related hospital visits. However, Newark, N.J., saw the highest increase -- 600 percent. In the Midwest, St. Louis, Mo., saw a 300-percent increase in amphetamine/methamphetamine-related ER visits.
