Research Summary

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned that only 30 minutes in establishments that allow smoking could put people with heart disease at risk for a heart attack, the Independent reported April 27.

The CDC issued the statement after growing evidence shows that toxins in tobacco smoke could cause the blood to clot. Terry Pechacek and Stephen Babb of the Office on Smoking and Health at the CDC said even eating in a smoky restaurant could cause a heart attack. "As unlikely as this sounds, a growing body of scientific data suggests that this is possible," they said.

The warning is the first time that the CDC has told non-smokers not to enter places where people are smoking.

The United Kingdom Department of Health cited the CDC warning to support its stance on smoke-free policies.
