Beer Belly More Common Among Binge DrinkersDecember 1, 2004
Research Summary
New research concludes that people who binge drink are more likely to develop a beer belly than people who consume the same amount of alcohol over the course of a week, the BBC reported Nov. 28.According to the study by the Center for Alcohol Research in Denmark, people who drink large amount of alcohol in one or two sittings were more likely to be apple-shaped. People with a beer belly are more at risk for developing coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
"We have some indication that people who are binge-drinking are more frequently apple-shaped," said Professor Morton Gronbeck, who led the study. "They tend to be abdominally obese, but drinking the same amount of alcohol spread out over the week would not give you an apple shape."
