Young U.K. Women Big Binge DrinkersOctober 20, 2003
Research Summary
A new study shows that young women in Britain lead all of Europe in binge drinking, the Guardian reported Oct. 17.The study by market analysts Datamonitor found that British women ages 18 to 24 drink 203 liters of alcoholic drinks a year, compared with 108 liters among all other women in the United Kingdom.
In addition, the study found that young British women drink nearly three-and-a-half times more alcohol as Italian women of the same age. After Britain, Germany and the Netherlands have the highest rate of alcohol consumption among young women.
The study predicted that the trend would continue, estimating that by 2007, young British women would be drinking 242 liters of alcohol a year.
"This is the latest in a series of studies that show women are drinking more than they were in the past," said a spokesman for Alcohol Concern, an alcohol misuse charity. "It highlights the need for more information about alcohol. For example, the number of units need to be put on bottles and cans so that people -- women and men -- can make informed choices about the amount they are drinking.
