Research Summary

University of Missouri-Columbia research finds that women get worse hangovers than men and get drunk on fewer drinks, as well, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Sept. 15.

"This finding makes biological sense, because women tend to weigh less and have lower percentages of total body water than men do, so they should achieve higher degrees of intoxication and, presumably, more hangover per unit of alcohol," said Wendy Slutske, an associate professor of psychology who led the research team.

For the study, researchers polled 1,230 college students who consumed alcohol. They were asked to identify symptoms they experienced after drinking, such as headaches, vomiting, feeling weak, and inability to concentrate.

The study is published in the Sept. 15 issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
