Cal State Alcohol Policy Yields Positive ResultsJuly 16, 2003
Research Summary
The first report on the effectiveness of the comprehensive alcohol policy implemented two years ago at California State University (CSU) shows dramatic results in curbing college drinking, the AScribe Newswire reported July 15.Preliminary findings from the report show a 5- to 10-percent reduction in alcohol use, as well as a 5- to 10-percent decline in underage students drinking alcohol within a 30-day period.
The report further found a 3- to 5-percent drop in binge drinking, a 10- to 15-percent reduction in student alcohol-related misconduct, and a 3- to 5-percent decline in property damage caused by excessive drinking.
In addition, there have been 20- to 25-percent fewer alcohol-related judicial cases, a 30-percent drop in alcohol-related incidents in resident halls, and a 20- to 30-percent decline in driving-under-the-influence cases.
At the time the university's Board of Trustees passed the alcohol policy, it was considered the most far-reaching in any university system in the country.
The key to the policy's effectiveness is its flexibility, which allows CSU's 23 campuses to customize an approach that meets their size, student body makeup, local community, and residence requirements.
