Britain Has Notorious Binge-Drinking CultureSeptember 22, 2003
Research Summary
Britons drink less per capita than other Europeans, but the way they drink has earned them the unenviable title of worst binge drinkers in Europe, Reuters reported Sept. 19.According to a report by the British government, 40 percent of all drinking occasions by men and 22 percent by women meet the definition of binge drinking.
"If present trends continue, the UK would rise to near the top of the consumption league within the next 10 years," the report said.
The report also found that British children under age 16 are drinking twice as much as kids the same age drank 10 years ago.
The government has called for a "more civilized" late-night culture.
"We've got to try to get into a culture where the whole of our entertainment isn't just about alcohol," said Hazel Blears, a government minister. "It should be about cinema, theater, about bowling, about a range of things."
