Research Summary

Australian officials plan to expand a trial program that links alcohol-related crimes to certain pubs or clubs, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Dec. 22.

An interim report presented at a recent summit meeting found that the Linking Project has been effective in reducing alcohol-related violence.

Established by the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, the Linking Project tracks where offenders, victims, or drivers had their last drink. The report revealed that much of the alcohol-related crime was centered around a small number of establishments licensed to serve alcohol, particularly in Sydney.

Once police identify the venues, they educate the business owner about serving drunk patrons and fine repeat offenders.
