Research Summary

Smoking and drinking are among the addictions identified as top risks to global health, the Ottawa Citizen reported Oct. 31.

The World Health Organization (WHO) listed the 10 major risk factors that lead to poor health internationally. Together, the risks account for more than one-third of the 56 million deaths worldwide each year.

To address tobacco addiction, the WHO urged countries to implement higher tobacco taxes.

Also listed as top world health risks are indoor smoke from solid fuels, alcohol, unsafe sex, unhealthy diets, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, underweight children, unsafe water, iron deficiency, and poor sanitation and hygiene in the developing world.
