Research Summary

In just one year, a California law aimed at giving nonviolent drug offenders treatment instead of jail time has helped thousands of people with alcohol and other drug addiction, the Los Angeles Times reported July 1.

Statistics from the first six months that Proposition 36 has been in effect show that at least 12,000 defendants were in treatment. Statistics for the full year are not yet available.

Officials said that challenges still remain. For instance, people who are severely addicted or have mental problems cannot be adequately treated in regular rehabilitation programs. In addition, officials are concerned that the current level of state funding will be insufficient to continue providing intensive treatment.
