Research Summary

Measures of addiction treatment effectiveness, developed by the Washington Circle Group (WCG), are currently being evaluated in pilot programs with seven managed-care organizations, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly reported Feb. 26.

The performance measures for addiction treatment fall under four major categories: prevention/education, recognition, treatment, and maintenance.

Deborah Garnick, professor at the Schneider Institute for Health Policy at Brandeis University's Heller Graduate School and a member of WCG, said the pilot testing will enable the group to evaluate the viability of the performance measures and provide a comparison of results across managed-care plans.

WCG was formed as the addiction field's response to efforts in general health to measure quality and develop accountability in services. A report on the pilot's findings is expected by late spring or early summer.
