Performance Measures for Addiction Treatment EvaluatedMarch 13, 2001
Research Summary
Measures of addiction treatment effectiveness, developed by the Washington Circle Group (WCG), are currently being evaluated in pilot programs with seven managed-care organizations, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly reported Feb. 26.The performance measures for addiction treatment fall under four major categories: prevention/education, recognition, treatment, and maintenance.
Deborah Garnick, professor at the Schneider Institute for Health Policy at Brandeis University's Heller Graduate School and a member of WCG, said the pilot testing will enable the group to evaluate the viability of the performance measures and provide a comparison of results across managed-care plans.
WCG was formed as the addiction field's response to efforts in general health to measure quality and develop accountability in services. A report on the pilot's findings is expected by late spring or early summer.
