Nine Drug-Free School Programs Designated as ExemplaryMarch 9, 2001
Research Summary
Nine programs were identified as exemplary by the Safe, Disciplined and Drug-Free Schools panel, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly reported Feb. 19.The U.S. Department of Education panel chose the programs based on their demonstrated effectiveness and potential for replication throughout the department's National Education Dissemination System.
The programs are:
- Athletes Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids (ATLAS) by Oregon Health Sciences University
- CASASTART by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University
- Life Skills Training by the National Health Promotion Association, Inc.
- OSLC Treatment Foster Care by the Oregon Social Learning Center
- Project Northland Alcohol Prevention Curriculum by the Hazelden Information and Educational Services
- Project T.N.T.: Toward No Tobacco Use by ETR Associates
- Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum by the Committee for Children in Seattle, Wash.
- Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 by the Institute for Social Behavioral Research at Iowa State University
- Project ALERT (Adolescent Learning Experiences in Resistance Training) by the Best Foundation.
The Department of Education will be producing a free publication that describes the review process and providing a two-page profile of each designated program.
