Research Summary

A study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that white drivers are responsible for 84 percent of all drunk-driving cases, even through they only account for 77 percent of road trips, Substance Abuse Funding News reported April 24.

The study also found that blacks make up 9 percent of the driving-age population, but account for only 5 percent of all drunk-driving cases. In addition, the study showed that most drunken drivers are youth.

The study, "Racial & Ethnic Group Comparisons: National Surveys of Drinking & Driving, Attitudes & Behavior: 1993, 1995 and 1997," examines drinking and driving behaviors and attitudes among various racial and ethnic groups. The study was based on telephone interviews with a sample of drivers aged 16 to 64.

Based on the study's results, alcohol-abuse prevention groups should begin focusing more education programs around small rural and working-class communities where whites generally live, the authors advised.
