Research Summary

A General Accounting Office survey found that few schools in the United States report students selling or misusing attention-deficit disorder or hyperactivity drugs, the Associated Press reported Sept. 14.

According to the report, of the 1,033 principals surveyed in 50 states and the District of Columbia, just 8 percent reported attention-deficit disorder drugs like Ritalin being misused or sold during the 2000-2001 school year.

The report, GAO-01-1011, was requested by Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.), former chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, after recent studies pointed to a significant increase in Ritalin's use and misuse.
