News Summary

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has directed cigarette companies to provide detailed information on their products by June, when the agency for the first time will begin studying the composition of cigarettes in detail, the  Associated Press reported Jan. 18.

Tobacco companies also must give the FDA any research they have conducted on the effects of cigarette ingredients.

The FDA will classify the ingredients, determine their relative harm, and possibly ban some ingredients or combinations thereof. Information protected under trade-secret laws won't be publicly disclosed, but the FDA is mandated to publish a list of harmful and potentially dangerous ingredients by the middle of next year.

"Tobacco products today are really the only human-consumed product that we don't know what's in them," said Lawrence R. Deyton, the director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products.

I am so grateful the FDA is finally investigating the ingredients in cigarettes; they are addictive by nature and do have harmful effects. I see behaviors relating to cigaretts that are similar to alcoholics and addicts behaviors. I look forward

HOW many years ago should this have gone into effect? A good example of why we don't trust the FDA to do their job whether it's prioritizing issues or calling common sense shots?

Ronald Reagan prevented efforts to have cigarette ingredients listed, saying it imposed too much regulatory burden on the tobacco companies. People should be informed of the substances to which they are exposing themselves, whether it is food, medication, cosmetics, or cigarettes. Among other reasons, consumers can avoid substances to which they are allergic. This is a reasonable level of regulation.

Even though marijuana is not medicine (despite all of the nonsense to the contrary), how long will it be before the government requires that the ingredients in pot are exposed? If the feds are going to turn a blind eye to the states as they spiral downward, couldn't they at least require some standards for pesticide residue in the products that children are consuming in their "faux" medicine?
