Three of Four Women Drink Before Sex, Survey Finds

News Summary

Many women say they prefer to drink alcohol before having sex because it makes them more confident about their sexuality and lowers their inhibitions, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported Sept. 24.

Three out of four women surveyed -- including both married and single women -- said they like to drink before sex, and about half said they liked being tipsy during sex because it lowers their inhibitions. Six percent of the 3,000 women said they had never had sex while sober, while 14 percent said they can't sleep with their significant other without drinking first.

The women surveyed had an average of eight sex partners, and had been drunk when having sex with at least five of the eight.

"The fact alcohol plays an integral role in their love lives shows that women are looking for a boost in self-esteem when it comes to their bedroom antics," said Kathryn Lakeland of Femfresh, the firm that conducted the survey. "But in doing so many women will be losing self-control, and this is when drunken one-night stands are more likely to occur."

I don't think that "an average of eight sex partners" indicates a rash of "one-night stands". In fact, this probably indicates a rather mundane sex life. Ask males how many sex partners THEY have had, either while sober or intoxicated. This is yet another example of the sexual double-standard that exists in the U.S.

The double standard, if it exists, exists for good reason. From my own experiences and those of the people I know, it seems women almost always have had more partners than a man of comparable age. The difference is that men exaggerate the number up, women exaggerate it down. Because especially when one is a parent, it looks worse for a woman to always have a different man around, never a stable father figure, while men seem to have an easier time getting away with being crappy parents. That, and apparently women make a lot of decisions about potential sexual partners while drunk.

The survey omits an important question: How many people drink alone before sex with a partner? My guess is precious few. The same survey given to men should therefore produce very similar results. I predict inconsistent data due to the fact that it's more socially acceptable for women to have sex anxiety than for men.

These kinds of findings are important for understanding better motivation for drinking. Our epidemiologists and prevention theorists have no categories in certain areas of "why people drink." Coming under the rarely seen category of "pleasure," such research suggests much more attention to the perceived value of drinking, if only to better constructs non-substance using alternatives

Regardless of one night stand, multiple partners, or monogamous relationship, the implications of this survey in regard to risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders are staggering. Given the fact that there is no known safe amount of alcohol for an unborn fetus to ingest, and the fact that a majority of women don't even know they are pregnant for at least the first month, there can be no question that invisible central nervous system damage is frequently taking place whenr women are getting "loosened up" for sex.

I am wondering what this says about women's self image and relationship to their own bodies...nothing good.
