News Summary

Parents are being more effective when they talk to their children about the risks of drug use, according to a new report from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA).

The Associated Press reported Feb. 26 that the 2008 Partnership Attitude Tracking Study found that 37 percent of teens surveyed said they had "learned a lot" from discussions with their parents about drugs, up from 32 percent in 2007 and the first time the measure has noticeably improved since the study began 20 years ago.

"Parents are talking, and what you see in the study, particularly among the girls, is the willingness of kids to listen. They're more open to talking about the drug issue than kids in the past," said PDFA President and CEO Steve Pasierb.

Pasierb said that past research indicates that kids who say they benefited from drug discussions with their parents are 50-percent less likely to use drugs.

The survey also found that 33 percent of teens surveyed reported using marijuana, down from 37 percent in 2005, with past-month marijuana use down 30 percent since 1998.

Parents were most likely to discuss alcohol and marijuana use with their kids than other drugs -- more than three-quarters did so -- while only one in four teens surveyed said their parents had talked to them about prescription-drug misuse. "Parents don't think it's a problem and they think it's safer than illicit street drugs," said Pasierb.

Great News! I have been working with parents and children for 40 years and kept telling them that their kids REALLY wanted to listen to their parents and that it made a difference. Keep getting the word out to all media.

Nothing like a biased organization conducting a so-called study that applauds the propaganda campaign of that same organization. While educating children about drugs is important, dictating abstinence-only policies to anyone (especially drug users) is counterproductive. For 20 years, the Partnership for a Drug Free America has perpetuated the nation's counterproductive War on Drugs by demonizing "illegal" drug use (but never far deadlier legal use of cigarettes, alcohol or drugs), drug users (by labelling them all as abusers) and children.

In 2001, I did a research paper for my MSW. The hypothesis was Social Connectedness As A Promoter of Abstinence. One of the more weighted questions that I asked my methadone maintenance patients was, do they explain to their children what drugs are really like. To my amazement, an overwhelming majority did not. They assumed they would learn on the streets, like they did. I am an advocate of LEAP, however, I still believe that children deserve the truth.

1. Time for someone to "study" PfDFA and find out how much funding they get from sources close to Big Tobackgo... 2. The recent mantra "talk to your kids!" plays on the fact that on some topics grown-ups are even more swayed by scare and fraud than kids are.

There has been research done in the past that indicates drug use discussions with children in regards to parents telling their children the "truth" about their own drug use can be counterproductive. Kids will do what parent did and one step further. Talk about drugs but be careful how much you share about your own "youthful" drug use behaviors.

What is up with some of these posts -- Bill and Maxwood?? It is not only common sense and multiple study results from various sources -- parents who communicate anything --especially views on kids using any substances (tob, MJ alc, pills, etc) and setting ground rules WORKS!!!! Relationship with parents are the #1 reason most kids who don't use/abuse will give. Maybe I am missing your point, but when is it every ok, acceptable or productive for any youth to try any drug??? Where is the propaganda, scare tactics, etc when a parent responsibly sets ground rules and consequences for their child? Unless paretns get on board, nothing much changes in most kids lives. Work directly with kids before making statements about what doesn't work.
