News Summary

Some high-end men's clothing stores in New York and other big cities are using free beer and liquor to attract potential purchasers, Newsweek reported July 8.

Billy Reid in New York's Bowery district, for example, recently held a promotional party where Modelo Especial beer was served; the company also serves free Woodford Reserve and Pappy Van Winkle bourbons to customers.

"It's like spending time with a friend, hanging in the parlor of a Southern home," said company publicist Megan Maguire.

J. Crew is perhaps the best-known store combining alcohol and shopping for men. The theory is that men hate to shop and creating a social context around a visit to the store can help overcome this aversion. Drinking also can create an air of "manliness" around an activity not traditionally viewed as masculine. (Similarly, some salons now serve alcohol to entice male customers.)

Baumans, a men's shop in Little Rock, Ark., that serves Budweiser to patrons, enforces a two-drink limit.  "We don't want to take advantage of anyone," said owner Wayne Ratcliff.

LURE, lure. Who in their right mind thought this header was reasonable or appropriate.

High end women's stores have been using champagne and liquor to keep women and encourage purchases. Interesting that women's stores are left out of this article.

Let's drop the other shoe: while various stores may use alcohol to grease the extraction of money from shoppers, the master practicianers of this are in the tobacco industry. Remember the "fraternity smoker" parties? You had to attend, and drink as many beers as the other boys, to fit into the gang and acquire organizational protection against the teasing and hazing that happened to youngsters, especially loners, at schools. And guess what was in the air, another dose with each breath (even if you didn't smoke any yourself, but you were expected to). Recruitment into lifelong addiction, sanctioned informally by the school itself.

Caveat emptor...just as they say you shouldn't go food shopping when you're hungry, people with common sense should know it's not a good idea to go on shopping sprees when your judgment is impaired by alcohol. It's wrong for stores to do this but customers still need to be counted on to use their heads.

Taboo! Taboo!! All Americans run quickly! Discussion of social drinking! Get over it. Maybe it really does make the experience better for the customer.

OK so maybe drunken shopping might be entertaining, as long as the customers don't drive themselves home from the store afterward.
