News Summary

A community improvement coalition in Madison, Wis., is proposing that surveillance cameras be installed in bars in the city as part of a strategy to cut alcohol-related violence and other problems, the Wisconsin State Journal reported Jan. 25.

The plan from Downtown Madison Inc. also includes server training and improved interaction between staff and police. The coalition includes city officials, representatives from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, police, business owners, neighborhood leaders, and others.

"In the past, the relationship between the hospitality industry Downtown and authorities and neighborhoods has been one of reacting to incidents that occur or enforcement actions," chairman Rick Petri said. "I'm going to do everything I can to do to convince the industry that it has to be at the table."

Two people were killed outside Madison bars last year.

Some bar owners said the plans made sense, but the president of the Dane County Tavern League called the plan "intrusive."

"Any individual operator is welcome to participate," Barb Mercer said. "We as an association are not going to participate."

"People came to the table as skeptics," said Downtown Michigan Inc. President Susan Schmitz. "But it's different than anything that's been done before. There's so much synergy here. The goal of this is a healthy downtown economy -- a great place to do business and a fun place to be that is safe."

It is sad when people who think they are doing nothing more than trying to protect society propogate the "BIG BROTHER" concept and continue to trample the constitution and personal rights our forefathers fought so hard to bring about. Maybe a group should form a Corporation that promotes installing camera's in the homes of the members of Madison Downtown Inc. to insure that they do not have intruders in there homes that could harm them or their property. As well maybe one of these memebers could have a medical condition that having a camera monitoring them would save their life. How about it Madison ? Sound like a good idea ?

It's sad to me when tax money has to be used to fund security (police) for the bars because they over serve, have high risk promotions, pretty much anything goes as long they make a buck. I have no problem with cameras. One of the the cities I work with was paying $200,000 a year for extra police presence in the downtown. The city told the bars clean up your act or we will. The bars did nothing so after 5 shootings that resulted in 2 deaths the city took action. Since the interventions crime, noise, and problems have declined. Business has not declined. Sometimes it takes strong leadership, and good policy to keep the community safe.

Wow, what a great idea,I know a camera can stop bullets, and break up fights, in fact the news shows how cameras stop robbery's all the time. And they can put them on every street light, and in front of everybody's house, hell, how about IN everybody's house, yeah, multiple cameras in houses, so it looks like the local Wal-mart, with cameras on you from the time you pull into your driveway, til you leave, then the remote camera in your car takes over. And look at all the jobs it will create, I wonder what "camera watchers" make an hour. And, if there's enough cameras, too many people will be watching them for any crime to happen.

What's the saying? 'Madison, so many square miles surrounded by reality!' It's making more sense each year.
