Smokers Complain About Taste of 'Fire-Safe' Cigarettes

News Summary

An increasing number of states have required that tobacco companies sell only fast-extinguishing cigarettes, but some smokers complain that the 'fire-safe' smokes don't taste good,
MSNBC reported Jan. 27.

The 'fire-safe' cigarettes include bands of thick paper that resist burning if left unattended for more than five minutes. Research from New York -- the first state to mandate the sale of 'fire-safe' cigarettes -- has found that only 10 percent of such cigarettes burn down to the filter if left unattended, compared to 99.8 percent of regular cigarettes.

Within the last six years, 37 states and the District of Columbia have mandated sales of 'fire-safe' cigarettes, and five other states are considering similar laws.

"I do understand why they did it, as a safety precaution," said smoker Katie West. However, she added, "The cigarettes don¹t taste near as good as they used to."

Some smokers claim the 'fire-safe' cigarettes leave a coppery taste in their mouths, and also complain about having to relight the cigarettes. "If you're not smoking on it regularly, like 30 to 35 seconds, it goes out pretty quick," said Ron Calkins of Erie, Pa. "You have to light them every once in a while."

Some smokers have crossed state borders to buy the old style of cigarettes, but tobacco companies say they can't afford to keep making both kinds, and predict that all cigarettes sold in the U.S. will be of the 'fire-safe' variety by 2010.

I tried the so called fire safe cigarettes. I almost burned my face while lighting it. The tube ignited like flash paper! These cigarettes are making many people very sick. There is a petition out now to repeal them. What do they contain? Fire retardent? As though there weren't enough chemicals already?

Just think when so many people get ill from the fire safe cigarettes, that there will be a lot of law suits going agains those that began and forced those being made. ... Has anyone mandated a fire safe stove yet? .... Nutty people!

Obviosly if they can't get us to quit then they can just kill us off with this chemical. I think when people get sick from this they need to start a tort law suit and sue to have this stopped before it kills people.

Well this is a great way to put the tobacco companies out of business! Just make cigarettes taste horrible..and they do taste different now and we don't know what has been put into them. Lawsuit sounds good!

I can not believe that smokers are complaining about the risk of dieing from fire safe cigarettes. How ignorant can you be. Fire safe or not cigarettes are already killing you. Get a clue.

Yes I agree people should not smoke - but they do - and our capitalistic society promotes it! This is ludicrist! Add more cost (paper) and process rather than taking away the chemicals that cause the slow continuouse burn (and cancer) in the first place. Re-engineering for the new trend does not have to be a brand new idea/process. Industry should consider backstepping to leverage their past experiences/practices rather than just adding more regulations.

Pagen, you are absolutely correct that many people smoke their whole lives and never get one of those so-called "smokers diseases". In fact, we now have antismokers telling us on a daily basis that NONsmokers are dying left and right of these diseases. That's the rationale for implementing smoking bans, isn't it? We see it on TV everyday, don't we? So, these diseases aren't really fussy about choosing whether or not to strike smokers or nonsmokers. Hmmmm...food for thought.

McDonald's is killing more people than cigarettes, why hasn't the government stepped in and forced them to sell only healthy food, not salt-and-grease laden garbage. I've been a non-smoker for 17 years now, but I respect people's choice to do it. My father's been smoking 2 packs a day since he was a teenager and is 69 now, never had any health problems and is in better shape then me. I've heard people talk about the new cigarettes and how horrible they taste. I've searched the net and can't find anything about what exactly was done to change them. Is it possible we might have lawsuits against the manufacturers somewhere in the future? It's my belief that this entire thing was started by insurance company lobbyists, and has absolutely nothing to do with "saving lives", just like the seatbelt law that was passed years ago. It was ok to drive without one for nearly 100 years, then suddenly we became safety-conscious. Rubbish!

Since the change in cigarettes... Migrains, horrible metallic taste that cannot be removed. Cigarette has more difficult draw requiring greater effort & resulting in deeper inhalation of smoke. Need to research which states all cigarettes without fire retardent chemical additives. Will quit when I decide I am ready to deal with withdrawal symptoms, govermental interference does nothing to alleviate this. Most products that assist in cessation have worse withdrawal symptoms than quitting. Cold-turkey after sufficient mental/emotional preparation based on personal motivation is most effective for cessation IMHO.

It seems that "We The Smokers" are the only group that do not get organized into changing the things we are concerned about. We do not like the price increases. We do not like the way we are treated like lepors, having to find places outside to smoke. We have no idea exactly what other incredients are in the cigarettes we smoke. Where is the FDA? We can read what we eat, what we drink and every single incredient in the drugs we need to take, over-the-counter and prescription. We have enormous power both in Washington and with our pocketbooks. Who is championing for us? We have a voice, why are we not using it?

I agree with Pagen I believe it is a conspiracy to kill all the smokers off. And Brenda FYI ...I don't consider myself ignorant..tyvm...but when I started smoking none of this info was out there about all the chemicals in cigs. by the time it was I was way hooked. And if you have never smoked and tried to quit you don't need to be in this argument in the 1st place. Seems you may be a little ignorant yourself.....It is my choice to smoke well it use to be

Attention all smokers! This is a plot to destroy all smokers, faster then we are destroying ourselves. We all know that smoking is bad for us, and that there are a lot of natural chemicals in tobacco that are harmful. But this is an infringement on our health. I read the other day that this fire retardant is some kind of vinyl chloride. It supposedly has the same effects as asbestos, now that's a good thing right? Wrong,i also read that the FDA hasn't done any formal test for humans on this product, just lab rat's. So now we're all part of an experiment to see what will happen to us after using this chemical for a prolonged period of time. We need to start a class action suite against this. I agree with a couple of other view points that, because we smoke, what's another chemical going to hurt. That's just pure _ull_hit! The State's and the Fed's are getting rich off of a minority, and at the same time trying to kill all of us smokers off. Shame on the politicians that help to push this bill through. They need to remember that they're elected not a privileged few who know what's best for you and me!
