News Summary

Medical-marijuana users in Rhode Island may soon be able to purchase the drug at legal, state-sanctioned "compassion centers," the Providence Journal reported Aug. 24.

Earlier this summer, state lawmakers approved legislation allowing marijuana-sales centers to be established for medical users, and the Rhode Island Department of Health is now drafting regulations to operate the clinics. California and New Mexico are the only other states that allow legal sales of medical marijuana.

Under the draft Rhode Island regulations, the centers would be independent nonprofit organizations regulated by the health department. Centers will be required to have a security system and keep the marijuana in locked areas. Locations where marijuana is grown also will require security.

The first center could open next spring.
