News Summary

A recent poll by industry trade magazine Adweek reached a conclusion that the magazine's readers probably were not happy to hear: most Americans support firm government regulation of tobacco advertising.

Adweek reported Sept. 21 that the Adweek Media/Harris Poll conducted in July found that 31 percent of those polled favored a complete ban on tobacco ads, while 14 percent said that such ads should be subject to tougher regulation and 27 percent said the current level of regulation is appropriate.

Only 11 percent said tobacco ads should be unregulated. Older Americans were more likely to favor a complete ban.

Thinking outside the box... or do you say pak... how about permitting cigarette advertising but requiring that part of the space be given to informing the viewer of the exact correct net weight of tobacco per cigarette (usually 700 milligrams) and including a diagram showing how to tear a 25-mg. segment off the cigarette and use it in a long-stemmed one-hitter. This suggestion is based on the theory that it's not the tobacco but ignorant misuse of the hot burning overdose serving format which provides health danger and nuisance to users and bystanders.
