News Summary

Philip Morris USA has begun testing the waters in the roll-your-own tobacco market by selling pouches and canisters of its L&M tobacco in Maine and Michigan, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported July 31.

The roll-your-own tobacco market is relatively small in comparison to traditional cigarettes: consumers bought enough loose tobacco to make about 5 percent of the total number of cigarettes sold in 2008. Still, the market has been growing steadily the past couple of years. In 2008, roll–your-own tobacco sales increased by 17 percent, according to the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.  Sales have increased by 60 percent over the last five years, although they have declined since a new federal tobacco tax went into effect.

As federal and state taxes continue to increase, however, more smokers may turn to roll-your-own tobacco products to save money. Philip Morris is selling pouches with enough roll-your own tobacco to make more than 20 cigarettes for $4 in Maine and Michigan.  A pack of cigarettes costs around $6 in these two states.

You can't make a silk purse out of a pig's ear. Deadly tobacco is still deadly tobacco!

Chris: if we can persuade the buyers to use a 25-mg. serving-size utensil instead of "rolling up" a hot-burning overdose like the suckers do, then "deadly" tobacco will be next to harmless. "It's the overdose, stupid!" Dwayne: same to you. With your anti-overdose utensil (or vaporizer or e-cig) even the addi(c)tive chemicals won't amount to much. Mel: agreed, addictive, but meanwhile let's get busy with harm-reductive strategies for the 1.2 bil. who are already hooked. Doc: you're overlooking another virtue: nicotine helps many junkfood addicts selfmedicate themselves out of weight gain. Instead of killing them, let's use GM tech to downsize the species to 7 pounds per adult by 3000, then we can accommodate 90 bil. individuals. Oh, yes, the pols grabbed the cig tax money to fund schools, roads, and cops to arrest cannabis users.

You Rock Maxwood. I have another question; Didn't the new President say he would not raise taxes on the Poor? Are not the Poor, or Lower income Folks the majority of Tobacco users, and by far the majority of Rolling Tobacco Users? I guess someone didn't like my first post, it was deleted, I wonder why.

I personally roll my own tobacco. I stocked up before the SCHIP program passed. I have paid for the healthcare of my three grown children. I didn't mind. However, I do not want to pay for the healthcare of other people's kids. I, infact refuse. Many others will as well. Adults who choose to smoke, like myself, are being swindled by their own government.
