Oral Cancer Tied to U.K. Binge Drinking Plague

News Summary

Cases of oral cancer have risen sharply among middle-aged Britons since the mid-1990s, and health experts place the blame on binge drinking and a surge in alcohol consumption in the U.K., the Guardian reported Aug. 11.

Cancer Research UK reported that oral-cancer diagnoses have risen 28 percent among men in their 40s and 24 percent among women of the same age. Experts said the trend is likely caused by alcohol use, not smoking, and called for stronger warnings on alcohol containers.

"These latest figures are really alarming," said Hazel Nunn, health information manager for Cancer Research UK. "For people in their 40s, it seems that other factors are also contributing to this jump in oral-cancer rates. Alcohol consumption has doubled since the 1950s and the trend we are now seeing is likely to be linked to Britain's continually rising drinking levels."

"These figures demonstrate once again that people are being struck down at ever younger ages with alcohol-related illnesses," added Ian Gilmore, president of the Royal College of Physicians. "There is an urgent need to rethink how we communicate the risks of misuse. The most logical way of getting this across would be through standard warning labels as they do with tobacco products."

They wait until a break out of oral cancer and then they think of this? Were not the many illnesses caused by drinking already abundant? Strange report. nina

I understand that nicotine cessation products such as Nicorette gum and lozenges also cause oral cancer. I wonder if this is really just one more unintended consequence of smoking bans that is being blamed on something else. After all, drinking is not something new.

Let's see. The smoking bans have closed most of the pubs in the UK so one can only assume this rise in oral cancer is due to chewing the nicotine REPLACEMENT gum that has been shown to cause oral cancer. Maybe it's because smoking bans have caused more people to drink more booze than ever before and they're doing it at home now since Ohio's smoking ban (see Dayton Daily News article). Either way, it's Tobacco Control's fault. I'm curious. What have your smoking bans now done for domestic violence? I noticed RWJF is concerned about depression and suicides. Have you ever thought that once you close places where people who are considered "family" gathered what the impact would be on people? Of course not.

May not be what you drink but what you eat. They concluded the incidence rates for HPV-related oral cancers rose steadily in men from 1973 to 2004, becoming about as common as those from tobacco and alcohol. The good news is that survival rates for the cancer are also increasing. That's because tumors caused by HPV respond better to chemotherapy and radiation, Gillison said. "If current trends continue, within the next 10 years there may be more oral cancers in the United States caused by HPV than tobacco or alcohol," Gillison said. Studies suggest oral sex is associated with HPV-related oral cancers, but a cause-effect relationship has not been proved. Other researchers have suggested that even unwashed hands can spread it to the mouth as well. http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-02-01-hpv-cancer_N.htm
