News Summary

Seeking to close a loophole in the city's already tough gun laws, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to make it illegal to carry a gun while drunk, the New York Daily News reported Sept. 3.

"Carrying while intoxicated is just as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, and it should be just as illegal," said Bloomberg, who also called for possession of armor-piercing bullets and giving a gun to a child to be classified as felony offenses.

"You can always strengthen your laws. There are some things that are not covered," he said during a campaign appearance.

How many times did "a cigarette or two" help an angry drunk remember to take the gun along? (Oh, but the Mayor knows cigarette taxes pay for a lot of popular government programs and, besides, the tobacco industry is especially generous to the Republican Party.)

Cigarettes help you remember to bring a gun when you're drunk? That's quite a reach. Do you want to make it illegal to smoke while drinking, maxwood? Let's stick to one thing at a time; that's what gets things done.

Poly-drug users don't do one thing at a time, that's what gets bad things done. Tobacco is the #1 enabling drug for many murders associated with drunken anger and also for vehicular homicides where a "one for the road" cigarette has "altered the consciousness" of a drunken person so that they believe themselves capable of driving.

Maxwood, this article is about DRINKING ALCOHOL, not smoking cigarettes. If you think they are related some how you need to specify how, and cite some studies that support your claim that it is the NICOTINE that is related in some way to subsequent murders or homicides, rather than the ALCOHOL. Many of us would appreciete some citations that we can follow up with for out work with clients. Without some scholarly references, what we have is just another one of your tirades.

I'm not claiming the nicotine itself directly causes the murders and accidents, I'm just trying to help the Mayor prevent them. My concern is the tiradeworthy tobackgo industry making a buck helping drunks self-medicate into undertaking risky behavior.
