Judge Blocks Law Allowing Guns in Tenn. Bars

News Summary

A Tennessee law that allows patrons to bring guns into bars -- but not to drink -- has been struck down by a judge who ruled that the measure is unconstitutionally vague and "fraught with ambiguity," the Associated Press reported Nov. 21.

The law, which survived a veto by Gov. Phil Bredesen to become law, contains exceptions that Chancellor Claudia Bonnyman said were confusing to the public. The measure replaces a blanket ban on guns in bars by allowing weapons to be carried into establishments that serve at least one meal five days per week or more as its principal business.

Restaurant and bar owners opposed the law in court, with attorneys saying that the public would have difficulty knowing which establishments met the criteria. However, Assistant Attorney General Lyndsay Fuller Sanders said patrons could just use their common sense and ask if weapons were allowed.

Supporters of the law said they expect to pass a clarifying measure, but that, too, could face a Bredesen veto.

These are frightening times here in Tennessee, and we must continually turn to our judiciary to rein in the "wild west" tendencies of our current legislature. In their overzealous gun worship, our legislators also approved a law to allow guns to be carried into all our city, state and national parks. These laws were universally opposed by law enforcement agencies, local government officials, restaurant and bar owners, park superintendents and rangers, and most citizens who can't understand where this sudden desire to mix testosterone, alcohol and gunpowder came from. The main objection to the guns-in-bars law here isn't that it is vague -- but that it is dangerously stupid. Restaurant and bar owners in Nashville reported a noticeable drop in business after the law took effect, which should have surprised no one. Alcohol and guns don't mix -- they never have and they never will.

Give us a break Bernie. 'Gun Worship'? Your argument is all over the place i.e.'testosterone'. What about woman's stupid use of guns? What are your facts based on regarding the laws are 'Universally opposed by law enforcement, government agencies, and business owners of Restaurants etc? They are not. Could it possibly be the economy that sales/business have taken a decline? Do better data collection. I agree with Bars not allowing weapons. This makes sense regarding the mix of alcohol and lethal weapons. So let’s be more specific in the law. The truth is however and the over all reality of gun possession in public is that you guys/gals are presuming anyone with a 'gun' is irresponsible and a 'bad person'. This is becoming such a distorted belief pushed forward by the naive Left with socialist aspiration. If we continue to legislate guns from law abiding citizens then only the un-lawful anti-socials (the ‘real’ bad persons) will be carrying! Is that what you really want? Jeeze… take off the rose colored glasses and do un-biased research before you spout opinion/propaganda.
